What an Australian tax invoice needs to show
- The words "Tax invoice" stated clearly on the document
- Your business name and ABN
- The date the invoice was issued
- A description of what you sold, including quantity and price
- The GST amount, shown separately or noted as included in the total
- Your client’s name and address, plus their ABN if the total is $1,000 or more
These are the general requirements listed by the Australian Taxation Office. Rules vary with your circumstances, so check the current guidance at ato.gov.au or ask your accountant.
Common questions
- Do I have to charge GST on every invoice?
- Only if you are registered for GST. Registration is generally required once your turnover reaches $75,000 a year, or $150,000 for not-for-profits. If you are not registered, leave the GST line off your invoice.
- Can I just send a normal invoice instead of a tax invoice?
- If you are registered for GST and your client wants to claim a GST credit, they need a tax invoice, and the words "Tax invoice" must appear on it. For everything else a plain invoice is fine.
- How long do I need to keep invoices?
- Five years from when you lodge the relevant tax return. That covers both the invoices you issue and the ones you receive.
